NVHM Training Week 4 – Not Too Shabby!

All in all, this was not a bad week! I got all 4 days of running for 21 miles AND both strength training days in – good stuff!

I hate to say it (because I feel like I jinx it every time) but the legs are feeling good and now that I’m getting my mileage back I can start working on some speed again too!

Monday was a rest day, and even though I only ran 10 miles last week I was ready for this day. I had another dentist appointment and came home and just crashed on the couch – it was wonderful! Real talk – for as much as I love running, I also really really love laying on the couch watching Law & Order marathons and catching up on the DVR.

I was really looking forward to Tuesday’s run. My legs were feeling good, and I was ready to go. It was a chilly, windy fall day and threatening rain when I came home so I broke down and put on capris AND a jacket for this one.

It was just ok. I really just felt like I was lumbering along baby sasquatch like, and couldn’t seem to get into a rhythm. When I started I didn’t know how many I was going to do but I was hoping for 4 and would be happy with 3. I wanted to quit after 2 but kept trucking along. I called it quits at 3.5 just as I was starting to get into a groove. Not sure why I didn’t go for the other .5 but I didn’t. Oh well!

Wednesday called for strength training and since I had plans to go to the hockey game that night I woke up early to get my sets in. <— I know, right? Look at me being responsible and dedicated!

I also made a fun sign for the game – didn’t get on the big screen/jumbotron, but it was a total hit in our section! It was a late, late night (especially when you’re normally in bed by 8:00 9:30) but so much fun even if we didn’t win.

Thursday was a BEAUTIFUL day and I was so excited to get home and run. According to my outline, Thursdays are for speed; it can be a tempo, fartlek, repeats whatever. I started out and could tell right away that the goal for the day would be to just get some kind of miles in. There would be no speed, this run was just about surviving. It was strange – I was trying SO hard but I really felt like I was running in place. I was exhausted but my heart rate wasn’t really up and I was barely breaking a sweat. Looking back, I think it’s pretty obvious that my body was tired (even though I didn’t really think I was) and needed a break but at the time it was tough. I stuck it out for 3 miles and bagged it. Sometimes, you have to admit it’s not your day…and Thursday was definitely not.

Friday was another strength day, and hot damn if I didn’t wake up early to get it in again! I’ve decided that, as much I want to stay in my warm bed for as long as possible, it’s just easier to haul my ass out of bed and get it out of the way. If I try to put it off until after work, it’ll never get done. I caught up on How To Get Away With Murder while I worked out and it made the time fly by!

Saturday I was shooting for 4-5 miles of hills, so I decided to use the loop that I normally use for my long run. I must have miscalculated somewhere along the line because I ended up with 5.5 miles. Oops.

I thought about making it an even 6 but then I remembered that earlier in the week one of my runs also ended in a .5 and I have this thing about ending my week on an even number. So, 5.5 it was for an 11:10 pace. Yee-haw!

Sunday is (almost) always Long Run day and no matter what day it is I always look forward to it! I was really looking forward to today’s 9 miles because I was meeting Jennifer at North Park! Even though she is fresh of a fantastic half marathon AND a great 5K yesterday she still met me to keep my company. After a hilarious parking lot mix up – we both parked in different lots and neither one of us wanted to be the “punctuality police” to see why the other was late- we got started. The first 4.5 together were so fun, and really just flew by! I couldn’t believe when we were rounding the corner after our first loop around the lake. Jennifer and I parted ways after about 5 or so miles and I took off for the final few solo. I didn’t bring my headphones, and I usually don’t run without tunes but it was really nice to just listen to my feet on the pavement and hear the wind and birdies chirping and enjoy the sunshine! I was feeling really good so I tried to pick up the pace for my last few miles and even managed a 10:36 as my last mile!

I finished with 9 miles at an 11:16 pace. Not too shabby!

Admittedly, this may have been a little fast but I was feeling really good and having a running buddy for the first half really kept me accountable and helped me make sure I didn’t go out too fast and burn out halfway through.

Overall, I’m really happy this week! Hopefully I can ride this feeling into Week 5 and come out with another strong week of training!!

The Next Big Thing

I’m just 4 weeks into training for NVHM, but I am already so excited about the next big thing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to challenging myself on the tough, hilly State College course but that is just practice for what I have on my calendar for next spring.



That’s right. It is GAME ON! I didn’t get to run my marathon this year, and reading all of the recent recaps from Chicago, Columbus, and the ones that will be coming out of NYC were giving me serious marathon envy. Also, if you signed up the day registration opened the marathon was on sale for $77. It was a no brainer. I can’t pass up a sale like that!

Even after I finished my first marathon last November, I insisted that I would never want to, or be able, to run the Pittsburgh Marathon. The second half of the course scares the crap out of me – so many hills!! I had serious difficulty running the half marathon last year and it’s nothing compared to the second half of the marathon course! Plus almost all of the training would be done during the cold, arctic months of winter. That means many early mornings on the treadmill, another potential Polar Vortex, snow, ice, the works. Pass. At least when training for the half marathon, you normally don’t start until mid-late February and can bypass the frigid month of January.

I’m not sure when my state of mind regarding this changed. Maybe it was after I had a fantastic race at the Pittsburgh Half Marathon this year (2 minute overall PR, 15+ minute course PR), where the course wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Or, maybe it was this summer when I decided that hills were going to be my new BFFs. It could even have been after I read the book Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Inner Guide to Success when I realized that the only thing telling me that I couldn’t run this course was myself. I’m really not sure…maybe it was all of the above; but what I do know is that I am SO excited to start training for this race!  

One of the big reasons I signed up for the NVHM is because of the hills – I figured that would be a perfect segue (definitely had to look up the spelling on that one!) into marathon training and prep me for the work ahead.

Although it’s a little early to set up my training plan I’m looking at some different options and am so excited to tackle this!

It’s so easy to compare yourself to what someone else is training for, what paces they run, how far they run…this quote reminds me to LET GO of that and focus on MY progress and MY results and to not get caught up in comparisons!

NVHM Training Week 3 – Kind of Another Wash

Oy. These last 3 weeks could be described as “1 step forward, 3 steps backwards”. My first week of training was kind of a wash, thanks to an abscessed tooth and a root canal. Week 2 was FANTASTIC – solid runs, good speedwork, and a great long run. Week 3? Pretty much another wash.

My tendonitis started to flare up again, and true Drama Queen fashion I spazzed. I was convinced that this half marathon was kaput, my spring race  already in jeopardy, etc. Thankfully, Jennifer talked some sense into me, and told me that it was going to be A-OK. She reminded me that one or two days wouldn’t destroy my training, and that most importantly, I know how to handle this injury and how to fix it!  I took an extra rest day this week, so I ran a total of 3 days, for…wait for it….10 miles. Honestly, I’m not upset by that. Disappointed? Eh, sort of. I’m disappointed that I apparently haven’t learned how to take care of myself, but not disappointed that I’m still running, even if it’s only half of the mileage that I originally planned for.  It’s better than nothing!!

I took Tuesday as an extra rest day, and picked back up on Thursday. 2 slow, easy AM miles on the treadmill. I didn’t care about pace…just making sure that I got myself moving without any problems. I also remembered that I’m supposed to be attempting to run on the dreadmill treadmill once a week to get used to it, so this was a good thing 🙂 .


Friday – 2 more miles. Outside this time…still no pain! YAY! Another note about this run? I got chased by the flippin’ turkeys again. Jennifer suggested that they may be chasing people because they’re protecting their babies, but I don’t think that is the case. These jagoffs were laying in wait for a total sneak attack on me. I do a lot of my running in a cemetery because it’s super close to my house and it has a lot of good paths to run on and is usually safe minus the turkeys…  Anyway, I try to keep an eye out for them so I can avoid the pack and I didn’t see them anywhere. I shit you not they were hiding behind some headstones waiting for me!! As soon as I ran past, 2 or 3 of them jumped out from behind some graves and started the chase. I screamed SO LOUD, and took off with those jerks in hot pursuit . Again, one of those time I really wished I had my phone so I could have (tried) to get a video of that.

I moved my long run to Saturday, since I will be at my nephew’s birthday party on Sunday! I wasn’t sure how long this run would actually be. I didn’t want to overdo it, so I figured I’d cap it at 6 if I could make that far and had every intention of stopping the second it started to hurt. LUCKILY, it never did so I was able to get all 6 in with no problem.

I was also super responsible when I came home and iced, AND stretched before doing anything else.  Post run, my leg was a little tight but totally manageable.

I’m not sure what next week will bring. Of course, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to get 4 solid days in but I’ll be happy with any running and am also fine with taking an extra rest day or rest week if necessary. Ok, that’s a little bit of a lie. I won’t be “fine” with a full rest week, but if that’s what I need then…that’s what I need. Look at me being so responsible and stuff.
